To get organic visitors, getting higher ranking for specific keywords is the primary aim for every blogger. But how many of us are following SEO guidelines properly? The scenario has quiet changed since last 10 years and the competition is viral than ever before. Those who are new to blogging should learn The basics of SEO and optimize their contents properly.
Top 10 SEO Optimization Tips
To get higher ranking you need to optimize your keywords as well as content. Here are the top 10 SEO tips to follow :
1. Title Tag
Place your primary keyword in your Title Tag, if possible place it at beginning of Title. Title should be between 6~12 words longer and be written in user-friendly way so that anyone can easily understand what is your content about.
2. Meta Description
Meta description plays an equally important role like Title to attract visitors and increase click through rate. Include primary and if possible also secondary keywords in Meta Description. Instead of pulling Meta Description automatically from the content by a plugin or theme function, it is important to manually write the Meta desc. Keep your meta description below 150 characters.
3. Meta Keywords
Search engines like Google stated earlier that they do not weigh Meta keywords anymore but some SEO gurus still rely on it. I still love to write 2 to 4 meta keywords/keyword phrase per post because I believe that it has still some value for Bing and Yahoo, moreover who knows that one day Google will give importance to Meta Keywords again!
4. SEO Friendly URL
The top most important thing before publishing any post is to adjust your permalink settings. Instead of the default WordPress permalink which has little or less value to search engines, adjust if from WordPress dashboard > Settings > Permalinks. It is also recommended to keep the primary keyword in the front part of the URL, is possible.
Some bloggers keep their permalink settings as http://www. domainname. com/2012/11/25/sample-post, but I personally do not like to include date in permalinks. As it will tell visitors on which date the post was published and visitors might feel less interest on posts which are 2 or 3 years back.
I also like to remove date from older posts’ “byline” after certain time to keep them alive. I am using Date Exclusion SEO plugin for this.
5. Content Length
The length of your content should not be too long to read or too short to understand. Minimum content length should be 300 words and maximum 1000 words for regular articles. If you write pillar article or lengthy how-to-guide, that is different case.
I prefer to write 400~800 words posts but whatever you write make sure that it provides good value to readers. Content should be to-the-point and unnecessary sentences should be avoided.
6. Long Tail Keyword
With the popular keyword it is difficult to get higher ranking, so why not focus on Long Tail Keywords which are generally low in competition and rank higher due to less competition. Say if you try to promote keyword like “WordPress plugin” which has 18,30,000 searches per month, it should be difficult to get rank on 1st page of Google and if you cannot rank on 1st or at least 2nd page of Google, there is no benefit from it.
So why not target Long Tail Keywords like “WordPress review plugin” or “WordPress login plugin”, for which you have less competition and good chance to rank higher if properly optimized.
7. Keyword in Domain Name
For blogging sites it might not be possible as you are writing on various topics. But if you are building niche sites on any specific topic, include your keyword in the domain name. Say you are looking to build a 1 to 5 pages niche site on “portable crib bedding”, so in order to get better ranking look to register your domain as portablecribbedding. com. If .com is not available, you can look for .net or .org.
As this method really works well till today in 2012 and search engines promote those sites quickly.
8. Write Quality Content
Without quality content you cannot expect to rank higher. When search engine promotes any of your post in 1st page, it gets visitors and if that post doesn’t give value to the readers, they seem to leave the post or site. Search engines consider this negatively and will pull the under ranking sites and replace your position with them.
9. Proofread your Content
When you can spend 20, 30 minutes or even 1 hour to write a post, why not spend another 5 minutes to proofread your content. You can find a number of grammatical errors, sentence construction error and other errors and correct those to provide good reader experience.
10. SEO Optimization checklist
After you finish writing a great post and proofread the content, there are certain points to check whether your post is properly SEO optimized or not. While you cannot remember all the checkpoints for a post, good to use a tool to facilitate your purpose.
Install a SEO tool like ScribeSEO, SEOPressor or EasyWPSeo plugin which works with post editor mode and can instantly tell which points you need to optimize in your post. I am personally using and loving EasyWPSeo plugin which is cheaper but more effective to me than its competitors.
Promote Your Post
Finally, after publishing your post promote it to Social media sites and build quality backlinks by Article marketing, Blog commenting, Forum posting and Guest blogging. You might be interested to check out my earlier post on How to Get Website Traffic and 5 Tips to Get Traffic for a Blog.
